Our country-this great Republic-means nothing unless it means the triumph of a real democracy, the triumph of popular government, and, in the long run, of an economic system under which each man shall be guaranteed the opportunity to show the best that there is in him. New Nationalism Speech Theodore Roosevelt, 1910
I have a great hope for all of you that will gather in Philadelphia.
My hope is that you will provide us with a great document that will define a new direction for the country. A document that is not a list of petty grievances, but instead an accounting of the issues that are at the core of our countries problems and a beginning framework for the future of our country. A document that can be accepted by 80% of the country regardless of their political or economic views. A document so strong that it will overshadow the individuals who will support or oppose it.
236 years ago such a document was created.
It is a historic task ahead for you. I look forward to reading our work.
